She wanted her hair to be blue.

July 23, 2008 / by euteacher

She wanted her hair to be blue.  We're not talking a subtle blue, but a bright, vivid blue. So, I made the hair appointment for Kari.  I did talk her into bleaching the ends of her hair so that  if she found it was not what she wanted, it could be cut off.  Besides, she had tried bright red and that didn't work so well.  You see, her hair is a dark brown with red highlights, so when she put the bright red on, it just blended in quite nicely.

We got to the beautician's salon with high anticipation.  The gal had gone to her supplier, explained what was needed, and got just the right shade. We knew that the dye would not be permanent, just about 3 weeks, but that was okay.  It was more of a shock statement to her friends to prove to them that Kari's fuddy duddy mother would actually allow her to do something out of the norm in our area.  (Hey, there are better battles to fight than hair color!)  Anyway, the beautician measured about three inches of hair and started the bleaching process.  She set the timer and started working on dying my hair.  (A nice normal color, thank you very much.)  By the time she was done with me, and I sat to process, Kari was done. The ends of her hair were devoid of any color. The color solution was placed thickly on her hair, she was placed under the dryer to bake it on, and I finished  up.

The timer went off. Kari went to the chair where the pieces of foil were taken off her head.  The color was intense.  It was exactly what she was striving for.  Everyone was delighted.  Kari couldn't wait to go to the county fair this weekend to show off.  Then disaster struck.

The beautician did the setting rinse that was required. As she rinsed, then towel dried Kari's hair, the color came off.  The beautician was horrified. After talking it over, she tried reapplying and setting the color with a hot iron for a more direct bake.  Same results.  We came home with Kari's  hair being a light blue.  By the time we got here, her neck was more blue than her hair tips along with blue dye being all over the collar and shoulders of the shirt she was wearing.

Our beautician was quite upset.  I think the supply house was going to get an earful. I know she will make it right, but the disappointment for Kari was heartbreaking.  As of this writing, all the color is gone, and she has bleached out ends. They don't look at all bad, but it wasn't what the goal was.

She wanted her hair to be blue.

Later.

Blue?  Hmmm......makes me think of little old ladies who use that rinse that makes them have blue or purple hair.

    Sorry it didn't turn out..

Yep, blue.  Kari has a friend who changes hair colors about every two weeks.  Bright orange was the worst.  Thank goodness, Kari was willing to do just the ends!

When our son went through his blue period, a store bought box of blue hair coloring  in hair color isle. And yes after a week of washing it was almost out. But a whole lot cheaper, mom.

    Sorry for her disapointment.

A week would have been great to have. I may have to search the WalMart aisles and see if I am capable of trying to take care of her myself!
